So after a rough year, last year, for my daughter who was in Kindergarten my husband and I decided to homeschool her. This is not my first time to ever do this. But it is my first time to do it on my own. My oldest one needed a bit of help in 7th grade so we pulled him out for the second semester and did an online charter school at home. I was able to work with him 1 on 1 on certain things and when he went back to public school he was ahead of the game.
This time though is different. I found curriculum online and it is not all done for me, there is no other teacher to help. It was a bit scary jumping into this. But I did what I knew to do…PRAY! Then got busy! I talked to many others who have gone ahead of me. And found so many different ways to do this. I read on all the styles of teaching and even took a few tests to see what kind of teacher I am (wink). Funny what all we come across when we set out to learn something new. And once I found the curriculum and things started coming in the mail, my nerves began to settle. I grew more confident as I saw all that was laid out before me.
After focusing so much time on what to teach came the fun part….putting the classroom together! It all is in His timing, I know. My oldest son just happened to move out right at the same time all of the decision making was happening. So I had an extra room. (wink) I am not going to lie. It was one of those bitter-sweet moments. I was sad he was leaving and yet happy to have the room to use for the girls. I cried while I packed up the remaining things he had left.
Well after about a month of putting stuff together I am still only ALMOST done. ha ha I am not upset though. I know my life and things just don’t get done over night. I am super excited that I have got as much as I have. (wink)
So the brown built-in in the corner houses all my stuff. It is like the teachers desk (wink) Under the shelves holds all my supplies that I use to put together lessons. You know the pens you don’t want your kids to use. ha ha The big black shelves I found for a really good price at Wal Mart. The top shelf is curriculum mostly. Then next shelf is leveled readers that I was blessed to get a while back. And the rest is dictionaries and books to go along with the lessons. The rest is filled with books for the girls, center time activities in the bins, and odd and end papers for the girls to use in their art projects. And lastly is that little white drawer that holds all the art supplies. I have a thing for art. (wink) Those paintings up there are some I painted a while back. I have never hung anything I have done. But I dug through my boxes and found a few that I am going to hang in here. And finally the Pink Rugs….they are so they each have one to sit on when they read or play games. Oh and they are sooo soft! If you have more than one kid you will know everyone has to have their own space at times….and rugs! ha ha
I decided to get a smaller shelving system to let the girls have cubbies. This way they can keep all their stuff in them so it is easy to find. They of course wanted to decorate their cubbies. Who doesn’t love stickers! (wink)
Just fun little touches my oldest daughter asked for in order for it to be like her Kindergarten class was. ha ha She is so cute!
This white board is HUGE! It is 4′ x 8′. I got it at home depot for $15.00! I was so excited! White boards are super expensive! But thanks to a pinterest tip I found how you can go in the shower lining section of the store and pick this one up for next to nothing!
So what classroom is not complete without the ABC’s on the wall! ha ha I wills say all was well until I hung the burlap. Now my OCD keeps wanting to pull them off and move them to the left. That will have to be another day though. (wink) And this picture shows the cute cubbies in all their glory! They were bought a Wal Mart too.
So here is where we have the computer. This acts as both a classroom computer station and my desk. I can plan my stuff for the day, print off things, and of course pay the bills! My favorite part here is the wreath. I did not think to hang this, my girls did. They added flowers to it from the Crepe Myrtles outside.
Well there you go. Our classroom. We are still working on it. I am waiting on some awesome chairs that I found on etsy for a bargain! The shelves and my soon to be chairs I bought. But everything else I already had. The desk I built a long time ago. The chair was from a garage sale years ago. The table (not shown yet) was a free kitchen table I got from craigslist. And the chairs were only $35 dollars each. I also have an old entertainment center on another wall that I am working on. I will show that one later. But it was given to me years and years ago. I love how this has all just been coming together. It is a great start for us on this adventure!
